RLI stands for Rotary Leadership Institute, a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions in various parts of the world. RLI is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in its member districts identify those Rotarians who appear to have the potential for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills so important in voluntary organizations.

Membership Is The One Common Concern Of Every Club

What beautiful weather we have had and it looks like we have another great week coming. Last week, I visited Fitchburg, Franklin and Westford, so I now only have Bedford, Concord Lunch and Westwood to go.

Bath Path NHS Students: Doing Well In Support of Polio Eradication
 
On September 18, Carl Good III, Ph.D., chair of our district's Polio Committee, gave a polio presentation to the National Honor Society students at the Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School in Charlton. This was arranged through Rotarian John Lafleche, superintendent and director of the Southern Worcester County Regional Vocation School District and a member of the Southbridge club. They met at a presentation that Carl, a member of the Rotary Club of Merrimack Valley, made at a Rotary Club of Southbridge meeting. Carl (shown, left, in yellow shirt, posing with Bay Path NHS students) notes that the recently renovated high school "is very impressive."
 
The NHS advisers, Eileen McNamara and Katie Cunningham, facilitated Carl's presentation. Eileen said, "So far, our plan is to have NHS members of our health-tech shop create a presentation on polio and the 'Purple Pinkie' Day to be given to the gym/ health classes the week before October 24. Then, we will have a fundraiser at the various lunches the next week to encourage school-wide participation."  
 
After Carl's talk the students came up with more ideas for the program. One was to set up contests where the students would donate to play.  Carl especially liked the Oreo cookie toss, where the goal is to flip the Oreo from one's forehead to mouth. Carl assumed the reward was "to get to eat the Oreo."
 
"They are a fantastic group of enthusiastic students," Carl states. "I am sure they will do well in their support of polio eradication."

Acton-Boxborough: Bud Flannery Is The Epitome Of 'Service Above Self' 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The Rotary Club of Acton-Boxborough and friends from other clubs, former members and a visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club Chapala in Mexico, recently spent a day full of laughter, fun and fellowship at the Ogunquit, Maine home of Acton-Boxborough Rotarian Bud Flannery. They celebrated his 85th birthday. Bud was granted the title of "Mister Rotarian" by the club in recognition for his many years of devoted and dedicated service above self, upholding and exemplifying the principles and ideas of the Rotary Way of Life.
 
Here's a brief recap of Bud's more than half a century as a Rotarian: charter member of the Rotary Club of Acton-Boxborough since April 6, 1962; club president, 1964-1965, district governor, 1975-1976; and perfect attendance for 53 years.
Marlborough: Stages Successful Business Expo Exhibit
 
The Rotary Club of Marlborough has successfully exhibited at the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, which was held on September 10, at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Marlborough. “This was part of our ongoing public image campaign,” notes club President Michael Lashua.  “Of course, we hoped to gain interest from potential members, but it was also aimed at making a positive image statement in the business community,”
 
The Marlborough club's exhibit included a large, colorful display of photos showing Marlborough Rotarians working in service and fundraising projects, presenting contributions, and enjoying their fellowship. Additionally, there were club-membership brochures, club Foundation Corporate Membership brochures, flyers and posters heralding Marlborough's upcoming We Want Your Junk recycling event on October 17, and of course –  the secret weapon lots of chocolate.
 
Shown, is Publicity Committee Member Elaine McDonald, who helped staff the Marlborough club's Business Expo exhibit. She used the opportunity to make the rounds, distributing "We Want Your Junk" fliers to the other exhibitors.
 
Club Publicity Chair Peggie Thorsen says, “A staple of marketing has always been face-to-face personal selling. Many people stopped by our table. All of them were impressed by the breadth of the club’s accomplishments. A handful of them showed genuine interest.  One of them, a young intern at the Chamber of Commerce, is an excellent candidate for our community Rotaract Club.” All those (about five) showing interest in membership were given a ticket to come to lunch.
 
The club has exhibited at the Chamber’s Business Expo for several years, but this was the most visibly successful year, yet.

Northborough: Applefest Street Fair A Good Time For Entire Family

The Northborough Applefest Streetfair, a key part of the annual Northborough Applefest, is sponsored and managed by the Rotary Club of Northborough. The 2015 celebration was held this past Saturday, September 19.

Northborough Club President and Co-DGE Pat Doyle, Co-DGE Skip Doyle, Karen Fusco & DG Jim Fusco (shown, left) as well as many members of the community came together for food, entertainment, crafts, exhibits, demonstrations and community information. It was a good time for the entire family.

Concord: The American Dream Is Still Alive - From An Indian Heart
 
The Rotary Club of Concord proudly announces the first in its annual Speaker Series, an evening featuring internationally acclaimed speaker and author Krish Dhanam, on Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the new Concord-Carlisle Regional 
High School. A social commentator, he has delivered his message of hope, humor and balance in more than 50 countries and throughout the United States. 
 
A native of India, Dhanam arrived in the United States with only $9.00 and a vision of promise in his heart and, in many ways, is the epitome of the American Dream. The advice he offers will stir you to the foundation of your belief in this great land. Dhanam serves as CEO and managing partner of Skylife Success, global ambassador for the Zig Ziglar Group and corporate adjunct with Ravi Zacharias.

Is There Value In A Prospective-Member Target List?

The term “target list” sounds like a desperate, last-ditch effort to entrap unsuspecting members into Rotary. Okay, so let’s use a term like “potential members” or “possible Rotarians” or “influential citizens” or anything you deem politically correct. 
 
The issue is, we need a vehicle to keep us focused on an actionable plan to attract new members into our Rotary Clubs. I will refer to it as a “target list”. Read more

Calendar listings are easy, free ways to publicize an event. Be mindful of submittal deadlines for publication and watch out for word or character limitations. Focus on the 5 Ws: who, what, when, where, why.

Leaving Behind A Legacy

Ashley Kaimowitz
Ashley Kaimowitz’s life was changed when, at age 16, she visited the Nonceba Family Counselling Centre, a facility in Cape Town, South Africa, that provides counseling and support for children and families affected by sexual abuse. Determined to make a difference, Kaimowitz filmed a documentary to raise funds to build an expanded facility. Even as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Japan, she continued to promote her film and rally support from the community for those in need. Ashley was killed by a drunk driver when she was 19, her life cut short before her dream was realized. But her family and friends were inspired to finish her work, and with the support of the Rotary community, they established the Ashley Kaimowitz Memorial Fund. The new center was dedicated in Ashley’s memory as a tribute to this dedicated young woman.
